Title: Need for placing a restriction on import of rubber and ensuring remunerative prices to rubber growers.
SHRI A.V. BELLARMIN (NAGERCOIL): Apart from traditional Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, more than eight States including three North Eastern States have taken up rubber cultivation with the support of Rubber Board. There is an absence of a viable demand and supply atmosphere for want of related industrial units in the rubber growing areas. The import of rubber, which is restricted to a mere two ports like Kolkata and Vizag, can now liberally come through all ports. This has led to a manipulated price fall affecting rubber growers. While world market price remains at Rs.57, quality Indian rubber price has fallen from Rs.65 to Rs.50 per kg.
Livelihood of many thousand agricultural workers, dependent on our six lakh hectares of rubber cultivation, will be seriously hampered. In Kanyakumari alone one lakh families will be affected.
So, I urge upon the Union Government to restrict import of rubber and ensure remunerative price support to Indian rubber growers by guided marketing and setting up of industrial units.
MR. SPEAKER: Hon. Members, those of you who had one opportunity in this week, will be called later on after others.
