Need For Restoration Of Azimganj-Nasipur Rail Line In West Bengal. on 1 August, 2002

Title: Need for restoration of Azimganj-Nasipur rail line in West Bengal.

SHRI ADHIR CHOWDHURY (BERHAMPORE, WEST BENGAL): Sir, Azimganj-Nasipur are the two railway stations situated on either side of the river Ganges, which were linked before Independence period for transporting goods by the Railways. After the Independence the railway line was left abandoned for various reasons. Again during the last year’s Budget proposal, restoration of the said railway line was mooted. But no amount of money has been sanctioned to continue this project in this year’s Budget. The connection of those areas by railways will help to boost the tourism given the historical importance of the District Murshidabad. Further more, It will help mobilise logistic support to the Army in the hour of need. The convergence of these two lines will considerably reduce the distance of Delhi from the Districts of Nadia, Murshidabad, Birbhum etc. This particular rail link also helps to reduce the distance to the North India considerably. Hence, I would urge upon the Railway Ministry to reconsider the proposal given in the last year’s Budget.
