Title: Reference made to the passing away of Shri G.K. Moopnar sitting member of Rajya Sabha on 30th August, 2001.
MR. DEPUTY-SPEAKER: Hon. Members, I have to inform the House of the sad demise of Shri G.K. Moopanar, a sitting Member of Rajya Sabha who passed away in the early morning today at Chennai at the age of 70 after a brief illness.
Shri Moopanar was one of the senior-most Members of Rajya Sabha. He was elected to Rajya Sabha four times in 1977, 1983, 1995 and 1998.
He was also a Member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 1989 to 1991.
An able parliamentarian, Shri G.K. Moopanar was a Member of Committee on Railways since 1998. He has aptly been described as an institution and his contribution to parliamentary proceedings was monumental.
Shri Moopanar worked relentlessly for the uplift of the poor and downtrodden. He worked hard for propagating national integration. It would be most difficult to fill the void left by this distinguished parliamentarian.
We deeply mourn the loss of this friend and I am sure the House would join me in conveying our condolences to the bereaved family.
The House may now stand in silence for a short while as a mark of respect to the memory of the departed soul.
11.02 hrs.
(The Members then stood in silence for a short while.)
