The Calcutta High Court has rejected a bail plea filed by Madan Mitra, transport minister of West Bengal and an accused in the Saradha scam. Mitra had moved the High Court seeking bail after his plea was rejected by a lower court. The bail was rejected by the court in the wake of ongoing investigations into the multi crore Saradha scam being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The CBI which is almost finalizing the case had opposed the bail plea on the ground that it would hamper the investigation process. The CBI is also on the verge of filing chargesheets in connection with the case. Moreover, Mitra is a very powerful person and him being granted bail could well hamper the investigation process, the investigating agency had also contended. A bench comprising Justice Nishit Mahtre and Asha Arora heard the bail plea filed by Mitra.
