The Rajasthan High Court Thursday sent notices to the state’s home secretary and director general of police demanding to know their efforts to trace about 10,000 people who went missing in the past eight years in the state, a lawyer said.
“The division bench of Chief Justice Arun Mishra and Justice N.K. Jain has asked the home secretary and director general of police to submit a written reply to the court in four weeks. The court has asked them to explain the efforts made by the police to trace these unfortunate people,” the petitioner’s lawyer A. K. Jain told.
“About 10,000 missing complaints were lodged with the police station in the past eight years, but it seems nothing has been done by the police to trace these people,” said Jain, lawyer for Krishna Kukkar of NGO Anti-Social Activities Prevention Society.
The NGO had filed a writ petition in the court Feb 18, accusing the state government and police of apathetic attitude in tracing these people, mostly consisting of teenaged girls and children.
Kukkar claimed in the petition that many of those who went missing are likely to fall prey to the human trafficking gangs.
He pleaded before the court that police do not even lodge a first information report when family members of the missing people approach the police stations.
