Delhi HC rejects Sajjan Kumar’s plea for extension of time to surrender in 1984 case

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday dismissed former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar’s plea which sought more time for him to surrender in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.The former Congress leader was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the court in a case pertaining to killing five members of a famil in the Delhi Cantonment area following the assassination of Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984. 

He had moved a plea seeking extension of time to surrender. In his plea, he had said “I need time to settle my children and grandchildren. I have six grandchildren. The life sentence came all of a sudden.” Kumar was acquitted by a special CBI court on April 30, 2013, while it had held five other accused guilty of the crime. 

The Delhi high court had on December17 overturned the lower court decision and said, “the trial court ignored evidence of the conspiracy.”
