Espionage racket: Accused PC extended till Dec 10

A Delhi court today extended till December 10 the police custody of Kafaitullah Khan, who was arrested for allegedly spying for Pakistans intelligence agency ISI.

44-year-old Khan was produced before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjay Khanagwal after expiry of his police remand and the crime branch of Delhi Police sought his further custodial interrogation, saying it was needed to unearth the larger conspiracy.

The police told the court that Khan, who was working as an assistant librarian in a high school in Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir, was in regular touch with a Pakistan-based ISI operative named Faisal and he used to pass sensitive information to him.

On being asked by the court regarding the money paid to Khan in lieu of supplying the documents, the police said that he used to get Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000 depending on the nature of the information.

The police also said that various sensitive documents have been recovered from Khan and he was required to be confronted with the arrested co-accused Abdul Rasheed, a BSF head constable, in this regard.

They also alleged that Khan used to collect information and documents from Rasheed and, thereafter, he used to send them to his Pakistan-based handlers.

Seeking further police custody of the accused, the police said that he was required to be taken to various places in Jammu and Kashmir and Darjeeling in West Bengal for further probe in the case as Rasheed, who was posted as a head constable in the intelligence unit of the BSF headquarter at Jammu, was arrested on the basis of Khans interrogation.

The police said that he was also required to be interrogated to know about the whereabouts and identity of his other associates who used to help him in procuring and supply of documents.

On November 30, the court had remanded Rasheed to seven days police custody in connection with the case.

Khan was arrested in connection with the case at New Delhi railway station while he was on his way from Jammu to Bhopal on November 26.
