The Delhi High Court has come to the rescue of a girl and her father embroiled in a cheating case, by directing police to not take coercive action against the two who claimed they were “victims of circumstance”.

Justice A K Pathak also directed police to file its status report and ordered the girl and her father to cooperate with the investigation.

The girl’s fiance had allegedly cheated several persons on the pretext of sending them abroad.

“Renotify on February 26. Till then no coercive steps be taken against the petitioners (father and daughter),” the court said.

The order was passed on a plea of the girl and her father seeking anticipatory bail in the cheating case lodged against them after the trial court rejected it.

According to the petitioners, the girl had met her fiance in 2009 when they were both studying at a business school and they got engaged in January 2012.

They have contended that they themselves were “victims of circumstance” as they too had on several occasions paid the youth (the fiance) several lakhs of rupees.

The petition, filed through advocate Amit Sahni, has alleged that the youth had demanded Rs one crore as dowry due to which the girl had refused to marry.

It has also alleged that the girl and her father had also moved an application for lodging of FIR against the youth and his family for cheating them as well as others.

The petitioners also contended that they were harassed by people from whom the youth had taken money on the pretext of making arrangements to send them abroad
