The additional building complex of the Supreme Court with underground parking space for 1,800 cars will be inaugurated on Wednesday.

The complex with twice of the built-up area available in the the present Supreme Court complex has been built to meet the increasing requirement for storing records & other needs of litigants, lawyers & judges. The complex built by Central Public Works Department (CPWD) can accommodate about 2,100 people & has also been connected to the SC complex by three underground passages with 5 metres width.

One passage is motorable connecting at basement at level one & other two passages connect at basement level two, which will be used by lawyers & for transporting the documents from the SC complex. The building has also been designed in a way to have large span windows & ventilators for proper sunlight entry & to reduce electricity consumption.

Sources said the influence of the existing SC complex has been incorporated & all materials & features are identical to existing court.

Two features of the building stand out as examples. Roof top solar power grid connected system of 1400Kwp has been installed in the building, which is perhaps maximum in single building in Delhi. This will help meet about 40% of the peak demand. “It has been built as a green building with all features including 100% treatment of sewage, rainwater harvesting & occupancy sensor-based lighting system. There will be no discharge of liquid waste in municipal line. This project a record of no mishap & has received the best international award for health & safety,” said a source.

Moreover, about 20 lakh blocks made out of construction & demolition waste have been used in this building complex & no clay bricks have been used at site. Sources said this has helped save about 35,000 tonnes of fertile soil. TOI has learnt that the CPWD has saved about Rs 60 crore in this project by doing value engineering.

The new building will have five functional blocks & one service block & these blocks are four to nine storeys high. It also has two auditoriums having a seating capacity of about 620 & 250 persons & it also housed a conference-cum-meeting room. Officials said E Block, which will be used for facilities, may get canteen, bank, post office & rail & flight ticket counter as well.
