The indefinite strike called by advocates of all the six district courts here continued for a second consecutive day, affecting judicial work with scores of lawyers staging ‘dharna’ outside court premises.

The strike has been called by the co-ordination committee of all district court bar associations of Delhi against delay in tabling amended bill regarding the enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction of trial courts in the Parliament.

“The members of the bar peacefully staged a sit-in outside the respective court complexes and vowed to continue such protests till the bill is not passed in the Parliament,” said advocate Sanjeev Nasiar, Convenor of the committee.

The bar members also halted traffic for sometime at the India Gate round-about with scores of lawyers staging protest outside gate number two of the Patiala House court premises.

Lawyers also staged ‘dharna’ outside other district courts complexes.

“The members of the co-ordination commttee reiterated their demand that they would stay away from court proceedings and would not appear in any matter till the Bill was tabled,” the committee said.

The officer bearers of the committee said that no lawyers appeared in the courts at Patiala House, Tis Hazari, Rohini, Karkardooma, Saket and Dwarka.

The committee has called for indefinite strike saying that despite assurances, the proposed bill recommending enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction to Rs two crore for the district courts, has found no mention in the agenda of present Winter Session of Parliament.

The committee also said that the full bench of the Delhi High Court had recommended to the Centre for enhancing pecuniary jurisdiction from existing Rs 20 lakh to Rs 2 crore.

“The same was done with the aim and objective to reduce pendency and work load in the Delhi High Court…,” it had said, adding, “Yet nothing has been done in this regard for the past nearly two years.”
