Sharpening its attack on Team Anna, the government Thursday accused the anti-graft group of demolishing the confidence of the common man by making baseless charges against the prime minister and cabinet ministers.

“We are determined to fight and end corruption but Team Anna is demolishing the basic confidence of the common man by making baseless charges against the prime minister,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters here.

“It is easy to demolish something but very difficult to build it,” she said.

Soni said the common man was facing challenges like price rise and the impact of a weaker rupee on the economy, but Anna’s associates were least bothered about it.

Team Anna last week accused Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and 14 other cabinet ministers of massive corruption in issuance of coal blocks during 2004-09 citing Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) draft reports and demanded a probe into it.

The prime minister hit back saying he would quit public life if the charges were proved.

Defending the prime minister, Soni wondered how could Team Anna level any charges on the basis of documents that were not final. “Private citizens cannot quote from a document whose author (CAG Vinod Rai) has said it is not final.”
