Nuh Violence: Supreme Court Petition Lodged Against Calls for Muslim Boycott

A petition has been lodged with the Supreme Court, seeking action against the promotion of boycott and marginalization of Muslims in the aftermath of the Nuh violence.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal presented the plea before Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud while the Constitution Bench overseeing the Article 370 case was on a lunch break.

Sibal highlighted instances where people have been encouraged to label employers of a specific community as ‘gaddars’ (traitors).

“Some decisions are taken that if a community is employed then the employer will be called a Gaddar. We will file an urgency petition,” he stated.

Sibal likely referred to incidents such as the call for social and economic boycott of Muslims, including depriving them of employment, shops, and rental houses, made during the Mahapanchayat in Tighara village.

The violence in Nuh erupted on July 31 when a mob attacked a procession organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) amid rumors that cow vigilante Monu Manesar would be involved.

According to NDTV, the clashes resulted in at least five deaths and around 70 injuries, including to law enforcement officers. The police have registered approximately 40 cases and apprehended over 80 individuals in connection with the communal unrest.

Subsequently, the VHP announced its intent to stage protests in the National Capital Region (NCR) in response to the violence. A request for a protest stay was made to the Supreme Court.

However, on August 2, the Court declined to halt the planned demonstrations scheduled for later that day.

Nevertheless, the Court instructed the State government and Delhi police to ensure the prevention of hate speech and violence during the rallies.
