Zaiwalla & Co. Llp appoints Sir Richard Needham as International Advisor

Sir Richard brings nearly four decades of experience in public-private sectors and is known to be a great friend of India. 09 July 2018, London: Renowned international law firm Zaiwalla & Co. LLP, has appointed Sir Richard Needham, former British Minister for Trade,  as International Adviser for the firm. An experienced figure in the world of politics and business, Sir Richard brings almost 40 years’ experience to the international, award-winning boutique dispute resolution practice.

Zaiwalla & Co  is recognised for its expertise in handling complex disputes for international parties across diverse sectors such as commercial, energy, oil & gas and global sanctions law. Sir Richard’s appointment is a great addition to the Zaiwalla team, supporting the firm’s continued growth in emerging markets (currently acting on a $4bn litigation for Iranian bank Bank Mellat) .

Sir Richard’s career in Westminster started in 1979, when he was elected MP for Chippenham. He quickly rose to prominence as a Member of the Public Accounts Committee before serving as Under-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, playing a key role in the rebuilding of Belfast and Londonderry. In 1992 he became a Minister of State for Trade, where he memorably brought a high level UK trade delegation to India on a specially chartered Concord aircraft. The delegation also included Sarosh Zaiwalla, founder and Senior Partner of Zaiwalla & Co. LLP. Whilst in government, Sir Richard was also made a Privy Counsellor, before leaving politics in 1995.

Following his political career, Sir Richard became a key figure in business, acting as Chairman for a number of companies including Avon Rubber Plc. and Biocompatibles Plc as well as a Director for Dyson Ltd. He has also been a Director of NEC Europe Ltd since 1997, and was also President of the British Exporters’ Association for 20 years. He is a founder Member of the UK-Japan 21st Century Group, and was conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Japanese government for his role.

The firm has an international client base with clients including Bank Mellat, Iran’s largest private bank, Mongolia’s Erdenet Mining Corporation and the Schulman case based on their experience with Russian clients. Zaiwalla & Co. has also recently launched a specialist Commodities desk to service India’s growing commodity industries including oil and gas, agriculture and the steel industry.
