A court here today convicted a man along with two others for orchestrating his wife’s death in a fake robbery attempt in 2009.
According to police, main accused Jitin Dedhia hired Nazim and Hasruddin Malik to murder his wife Beena as he was in love with his brother-in-law’s wife Rupal Chheda, but Beena refused to give him divorce.
The trial was shifted to the sessions court in south Mumbai after the Sewri sessions court wrongly discharged the accused in 2010.
“The court today convicted Jitin, Nazim and Malik and acquitted Rajnikanth (another accused) for lack of evidence,” said special public prosecutor Rohini Salian.
Rupal, made an accused by the police, was discharged by the Bombay High Court earlier.
The court is likely to pronounce the quantum of sentence on August 1.
“We examined 35 witnesses,” said Salian.
Beena was stabbed to death by two men who came on motorcycle in Kalachowkie area on October 27, 2009, when she and Jitin were out on a morning walk. Jitin was also injured.
However, the investigation by Mumbai crime branch revealed that Jitin himself had staged the attack to murder Beena and tried to make it look like a robbery attempt.
According to the police, Jitin had given the attackers Rs one lakh.
