The II additional sessions judge (ASJ) Court, LB Nagar, convicted a 27-year-old man in a dowry death case & awarded him seven-year rigorous imprisonment (RI). He was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 5,000.

The dowry death case was registered in 2014 after 20-year-old Afsar Zabeen committed suicide by hanging due to frequent harassment for additional dowry by her husband, Shaik Mohammod.

At the time of the wedding, according to police, the victim’s family gave ?2 lakh net cash, 10.5 tolas gold, 45 tolas silver, a Honda Shine motorcycle & other items as dowry & performed her marriage to Shaik, a private employee & a resident of Maheswaramvillage.

However, after a few days of marriage, Shaik started harassing the victim for additional dowry & wanted a fridge. Afsar also found that Shaik was having an extramarital affair. He would come back home drunk & beat up the victim. In April, unable to tolerate the harassment, the victim committed suicide by hanging herself at her house.
